The VNREDSat-1 satellite initiative has been a pivotal step in strengthening Vietnam and France’s collaboration in space technology. This program is set to advance further, focusing on next-generation satellite development, technology transfer, training, and bolstering Vietnam’s domestic capabilities. VNREDSat-1, launched on May 7, 2013, marked Vietnam’s entry into Earth observation from space and was officially operational by September of that year. Defying its original five-year lifespan, the satellite impressively remains active in 2026, celebrating its 14th year of service.
Beyond just satellite operation, the program has been instrumental in enhancing Vietnam’s technical expertise. Between 2011 and 2013, Vietnamese engineers underwent extensive training in both France and Vietnam, equipping them with skills in system design, satellite operations, and troubleshooting. This training empowered them to independently address technical challenges, transitioning from merely following transferred procedures to crafting their own solutions. Vietnam also established a comprehensive remote-sensing system that manages imaging requests, satellite control, data reception, and distribution. Since 2020, VNREDSat-1 has provided nearly 30,000 satellite images, playing a crucial role in environmental management, disaster monitoring, scientific research, socio-economic development, and national defense.
Trần Hồng Thái, President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, emphasized the program’s role in laying a technical and human-resource foundation critical for future satellite projects. However, he noted the necessity for further advancement in areas such as satellite design, payloads, electronics, flight software, assembly, and testing to achieve greater technological independence.
A new chapter of cooperation was initiated during French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to Vietnam in May 2025, highlighted by a declaration of intent signed between the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Airbus Defence and Space, and the French National Centre for Space Studies. This agreement aims at long-term collaboration in space technology and Earth observation, with a focus on developing a next-generation Earth observation system and exploring technological options for VNREDSat-2.
Future collaborations are anticipated to emphasize Vietnamese involvement in mission planning, system design, and software development. Key areas such as control software, remote-sensing image processing, artificial intelligence, ground systems, and specific sensors offer Vietnam the opportunity to cultivate stronger domestic expertise. The overarching goal is to progress from purchasing satellite systems to co-developing them, enabling Vietnamese scientists and engineers to gradually design, operate, and eventually innovate future satellite technologies independently.
