In a significant move to enhance both bilateral and regional collaboration, Singapore and Thailand have pledged to strengthen their ties as they prepare to lead the ASEAN chairmanship in successive years — with Singapore set for 2027 and Thailand for 2028. This agreement was reached during the fifth Singapore-Thailand Leaders’ Retreat, held in Bangkok on September 2, marking the first meeting between Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, as well as the first bilateral retreat in over a decade.

The leaders characterized their countries’ bilateral relations as robust and committed to developing a multi-year agenda to ensure continuity in their respective ASEAN leadership roles. Key areas of expanded cooperation include artificial intelligence, digital and green economies, energy resilience, food security, connectivity, defense and security, and the fight against transnational crime. Additionally, both nations reaffirmed their support for a rules-based international order and emphasized the importance of stronger ASEAN regional integration.

Energy cooperation emerged as a prominent focus during the discussions, particularly support for the ASEAN Power Grid and the Laos-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore Power Integration Project. This initiative enables Singapore to import renewable hydropower from Laos via Thailand and Malaysia, highlighting a critical step in regional energy collaboration.

A memorandum of understanding on social sector development was also signed during the retreat. This agreement aims to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and research on social welfare policies and foster cooperation between relevant institutions in both countries.

Economic ties between Singapore and Thailand remain substantial, with bilateral trade reaching approximately US$52.4 billion in 2025. Singapore has consistently been Thailand’s largest source of foreign direct investment for three consecutive years, underscoring the strong economic linkages between the two nations.
