Dwayne Johnson returns to his celebrated role as the demigod Maui, a character he first brought to life in the 2016 animated movie. In addition to reprising his role, Johnson also takes on the role of producer for this project. He remarked that the film portrays Moana as “not a princess, but a warrior,” underscoring the universal appeal of its themes centered around community, self-discovery, and Polynesian culture.
The title role is undertaken by 19-year-old Australian actor Catherine Lagaʻaia, who brings her Samoan heritage to the character. Her casting followed an extensive selection process that saw more than 32,000 candidates audition. Lagaʻaia expressed that portraying Moana contributed significantly to her personal growth. She admired the character’s compassion and empathy, noting that Moana often chooses understanding over anger, even in challenging situations.
