Vietnam and Norway are set to deepen their bilateral cooperation in key areas such as trade, renewable energy, and maritime development. This follows a recent meeting in Hanoi between Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister Le Thi Thu Hang and Norwegian State Secretary Astrid Bergmål, where both nations reaffirmed their commitment to expanding economic ties and enhancing political dialogue as they approach 55 years of diplomatic relations in 2026.
A significant development from the meeting was the progress on a Free Trade Agreement between Vietnam and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) member states. After 14 years of negotiations, the agreement is poised to boost market access and foster business partnerships. Deputy Minister Hang emphasized the importance of completing ratification procedures swiftly to pave the way for implementation, which is expected to offer greater certainty for investors.
The countries also focused on their recently signed Green Strategic Partnership, aimed at promoting sustainable development and facilitating the transition to cleaner energy sources. Vietnam invited Norwegian enterprises and financial institutions to increase their investments in areas such as renewable energy, maritime transport, shipbuilding, and high-tech aquaculture. In response, Norway showed interest in expanding cooperation in marine management, sustainable aquaculture, and green shipping.
Another area of cooperation discussed was regional engagement, particularly through the ASEAN-Norway partnership for the period of 2026–2030. Both nations intend to work together more closely on initiatives related to the blue economy, energy transition, and sustainable development. Additionally, they pledged to enhance coordination between their foreign ministries and support each other in international forums, including the United Nations.
The discussions underscored a mutual dedication to reinforcing economic opportunities and diplomatic relations while advancing sustainable development goals. Both countries also affirmed the importance of adhering to international law and the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, highlighting their commitment to free trade and international cooperation.
