Vietnam and Switzerland have committed to enhancing their Comprehensive Partnership, prioritizing areas such as trade, investment, scientific research, digital finance, and sustainable development. This decision emerged during Swiss President Guy Parmelin’s official visit to Vietnam, which marked the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
A significant result of the visit was the signing of a Free Trade Agreement between Vietnam and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), to which Switzerland belongs. This agreement is anticipated to enhance market access, bolster business expansion, and create significant opportunities for trade and investment once it is implemented.
The two nations aim to boost their bilateral trade, which surpassed $1 billion in 2025, and to attract more Swiss investment in Vietnam. Key sectors identified for this increased cooperation include green finance, digital technology, infrastructure, sustainable tourism, and workforce development.
In addition to economic ties, Vietnam and Switzerland are keen on advancing joint research and technology transfers in fields such as biomedicine, renewable energy, agriculture, and the digital economy. Enhanced cooperation between government bodies, academic institutions, and businesses is expected to drive innovation and the practical application of research findings.
Vietnam also intends to fortify educational partnerships, focusing on exchanges involving experts, researchers, and students, leveraging Switzerland’s expertise in education and scientific research. This move is aligned with both countries’ dedication to sustainable development, free trade, and multilateral cooperation.
The discussions underscored the importance of political dialogue and collaboration through international institutions. By deepening their partnership, Vietnam and Switzerland aim to support economic growth and contribute to regional and global stability.
