Tô Lâm, the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and President, has been honored with the 2026 Lev N. Tolstoy International Peace Prize. This award recognizes his contributions to fostering peace and international collaboration. The international jury, in a unanimous decision, highlighted Tô Lâm’s dedication to enhancing dialogue and cooperation between nations.
Valery Gergiev, the jury chairman and esteemed General Director of the Bolshoi Theatre, announced the decision, commending Vietnam’s ability to achieve rapid economic growth while maintaining its cultural identity amidst the challenges of global integration. The jury praised Tô Lâm for his significant role in advancing Vietnam’s development and supporting global justice, as well as promoting respect for international law and encouraging peaceful dialogue in global affairs.
The jury, which includes notable figures such as Vladimir Tolstoy, a descendant of the illustrious Russian writer Leo Tolstoy, French public figure Pierre de Gaulle, and South African parliamentarian Lindiwe Sisulu, emphasized the importance of upholding the humanitarian values espoused by Tolstoy. They also lauded Vietnam’s remarkable transformation from a war-torn nation to one of the fastest-growing economies in the Asia-Pacific region, citing the country’s development as a beacon of hope for nations aspiring for peace and sustainable progress.
Now in its third iteration, the Lev N. Tolstoy International Peace Prize honors individuals who have made profound contributions to peace and the advancement of international understanding. The recipient is chosen by an international council composed of distinguished political, cultural, and public personalities from countries including Argentina, Belarus, China, France, India, Japan, Russia, and South Africa.
