In a recent diplomatic engagement, Thailand has voiced its apprehensions to China over the latter’s recent delivery of military tanks to Cambodia, suggesting that this action might destabilize the delicate ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia. This concern was articulated by Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul during his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, as confirmed by Thailand’s foreign ministry. Officials have indicated that the timing and manner of this military aid could exacerbate the already strained relations between the two nations, despite several ceasefire agreements being in place.
Under an existing military cooperation agreement, Cambodia received 39 Chinese-manufactured T-59D battle tanks. Thai authorities have assured that there is no sign these tanks have been positioned near the contentious border. The relationship between Thailand and Cambodia remains tense following violent clashes at their shared border last year, with lingering disputes over land and maritime boundaries, which are rooted in colonial-era treaties and historical maps, continuing to impede diplomatic negotiations.
China, in its defense, has stated that its military cooperation with both Thailand and Cambodia is standard and not aimed at any third-party nation. Earlier this year, China further strengthened its military ties with Cambodia by delivering a Type 056 guided-missile corvette. Despite these developments, Thai officials have acknowledged China’s neutral position and its efforts to defuse tensions, while underscoring that the core disputes between Thailand and Cambodia need to be addressed through direct negotiations.
Beyond the military aid discussion, China and Thailand have agreed to initiate a new dialogue mechanism involving their foreign and defense ministers. The inaugural session of this dialogue is anticipated to focus on addressing cross-border scam operations, a pressing issue that affects both nations. This new dialogue format represents a step forward in bilateral cooperation, as both countries seek to reinforce their regional stability and security partnerships.
