Vietnamese Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng and Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing held a significant meeting in Hà Nội on September 5, focusing on strengthening the bonds between their nations. The leaders committed to enhancing bilateral relations and expanding cooperation in various sectors. Hưng expressed Vietnam’s support for Myanmar’s aspirations for stability, reconciliation, dialogue, and economic progress. In response, Min Aung Hlaing lauded Vietnam’s socio-economic strides and its elevated regional and international stature, indicating an eagerness to learn from Vietnam’s development trajectory. He also affirmed Myanmar’s dedication to preserving its longstanding friendship and wide-ranging cooperation with Vietnam.
The meeting highlighted recent positive developments in the Vietnam-Myanmar relationship, with both leaders agreeing to bolster high-level exchanges and political trust. They emphasized the importance of reinstating essential cooperation frameworks in areas such as trade, security, and defense. Notably, defense and security collaboration is set to become a cornerstone of their partnership, with plans to intensify efforts against cross-border crime, cybercrime, online fraud, and drug trafficking. Additionally, the two countries aim to expand military training, exchange programs for young officers, and collaboration on tackling non-traditional security threats.
Economic collaboration was another central theme of the discussions. Both countries are exploring avenues to boost trade and modernize existing agreements related to trade, investment, and customs. Myanmar is particularly encouraging Vietnamese investment in sectors such as telecommunications, digital transformation, high-tech agriculture, aquaculture, food processing, irrigation, and infrastructure development. Furthermore, the leaders contemplated enhancing infrastructure and air connectivity, restoring direct flights, and developing joint tourism initiatives, with a focus on spiritual and medical tourism.
On the regional front, Vietnam reiterated its commitment to working with ASEAN members to sustain dialogue and constructive engagement with Myanmar. Both countries advocate for the peaceful resolution of disputes in accordance with international law. As part of their diplomatic exchanges, Hưng extended an invitation to Min Aung Hlaing to participate in the CLMV Summit and to chair the ACMECS Summit in Hà Nội in November 2026. In turn, the Myanmar president extended an invitation to Hưng for a visit to Myanmar at a mutually agreeable time.
