In a recent mid-year meeting held in Da Nang, Vietnam and Laos evaluated the advancements made in their 2026 cooperation plan, emphasizing enhanced collaboration across several sectors including investment, trade, infrastructure, energy, and human resource development. Officials from both nations reviewed the progress achieved in the initial eight months of the year and charted out priorities for the remainder of 2026, indicating a robust partnership between the two countries.
Economic ties have been particularly strong, with Vietnamese enterprises initiating 20 new investment projects in Laos, collectively valued at $638.3 million, during the first seven months. Laos stands as Vietnam’s largest destination for overseas investment, hosting around 300 Vietnamese-backed projects worth over $7 billion. Bilateral trade between the two nations reached approximately $1.3 billion in the first half of the year, highlighting the deepening economic integration.
The meeting also underscored progress in energy, transport, construction, and infrastructure connectivity. These sectors are seeing active collaboration as both countries aim to bolster their economic frameworks and infrastructure networks. Education and human resource development continue to be pivotal areas of cooperation, with Vietnam committing to provide 1,300 scholarships to Lao students this year. Additionally, as part of a broader assistance program running from 2026 to 2030, Vietnam has allocated $43 million in aid to Laos for 2026.
Both countries are determined to enhance coordination on significant projects, address investment challenges, and solidify economic links within the wider Vietnam-Laos-Cambodia region. This commitment reflects their shared vision for regional development and prosperity.
