During a visit to Brunei, Singapore’s Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah reaffirmed their dedication to enhancing bilateral relations. The visit coincided with celebrations for the Sultan’s 80th birthday, providing an opportunity for both leaders to discuss the future of their countries’ cooperation. They underscored key upcoming anniversaries, such as the 50th year of their defence partnership in 2026 and the 60th year of their Currency Interchangeability Agreement in 2027.
The discussions between the leaders also encompassed a range of important topics, including the expansion of collaboration in energy, food security, and supply chain resilience. Additionally, they explored ways to increase people-to-people exchanges, recognizing the value of such interactions in strengthening ties between their nations.
As part of his trip, Lee engaged with Brunei’s Crown Prince and other senior ministers, focusing on initiatives that aim to fortify connections between future leaders and youth from both countries. These discussions reflect a mutual interest in ensuring that the next generation continues to build on the strong foundation established by their predecessors.
Beyond the diplomatic meetings, Lee participated in official birthday events for the Sultan and took the time to meet with Singapore Armed Forces personnel stationed in Brunei for training. He also visited a Singapore-run aquaculture farm in the area, highlighting the diverse areas of cooperation between the two countries. This visit underscores Singapore’s commitment to maintaining a comprehensive and multifaceted relationship with Brunei.
