In the face of escalating Russian missile attacks on Ukrainian cities, European leaders are gathering in Kyiv to address critical air-defense requirements and explore strategies to intensify pressure on Moscow. The Coalition of the Willing, a group spearheaded by Britain, France, and Germany, is convening this meeting with several other European leaders participating remotely. Joining the discussions is EU Council President Antonio Costa, highlighting the significance of the collaborative effort.
The uptick in Russian missile strikes has resulted in civilian casualties and significant damage to residential areas in Kyiv and beyond. In response, Ukraine has been vocal in its appeals for enhanced air-defense systems and interceptor missiles to safeguard its population. Britain is poised to declare its support for Ukraine, while France is set to initiate local production of the SCALP missile, which is known for its long-range capabilities. Moreover, France has committed to supplying additional interceptor missiles to bolster Ukraine’s defensive measures.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed concerns over the declining delivery of Patriot interceptor missiles. In 2023, Ukraine received 675 of these missiles, a number that is projected to drop to 364 by 2025, and further decrease to 264 in 2026. As winter approaches, Kyiv is actively seeking at least 300 interceptors to reinforce its defenses against continuing threats.
Ukraine’s reliance on advanced Western air-defense systems remains substantial, as these systems play a crucial role in countering Russian ballistic missiles, which present considerable interception challenges. In light of this dependency, European allies are exploring avenues to augment supplies while simultaneously maintaining diplomatic and strategic pressure on Russia.
