The VNREDSat-1 satellite program has significantly bolstered the partnership between Vietnam and France in the realm of space technology. This collaboration has set the stage for future developments, with a focus on advancing next-generation satellites, technology transfer, and enhancing Vietnam’s domestic capabilities. Initially launched on May 7, 2013, VNREDSat-1 marked Vietnam’s entry into Earth observation from space. Despite being designed for a five-year lifecycle, the satellite is still operational as of 2026, completing 14 years in service.
Beyond merely operating the satellite, the program has been instrumental in expanding Vietnam’s technical expertise. Between 2011 and 2013, Vietnamese engineers underwent rigorous training in both France and Vietnam, acquiring skills in system design, satellite operations, and troubleshooting. This training enabled them to independently address technical challenges, transitioning from following established procedures to crafting their own solutions. Additionally, Vietnam established a comprehensive remote-sensing system that manages everything from imaging requests and satellite control to data reception, processing, storage, and distribution. Since 2020, VNREDSat-1 has produced nearly 30,000 images to aid environmental and natural resource management, disaster monitoring, scientific research, socio-economic development, and defense.
Trần Hồng Thái, President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, emphasized the program’s role in laying a robust technical and human-resource foundation for future satellite projects. He noted, however, that achieving technological self-reliance would necessitate advancements in satellite design, payloads, electronics, flight software, assembly, integration, testing, and ground systems. A new chapter of collaboration was initiated during French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to Vietnam in May 2025. During this visit, a declaration of intent for long-term cooperation in space technology and Earth observation was signed between the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Airbus Defence and Space, and the French National Centre for Space Studies.
Looking ahead, the partnership aims to increase Vietnamese involvement in mission planning, system design, subsystem development, software, testing, and data applications. Vietnam has the potential to significantly enhance its domestic expertise through areas like control software, remote-sensing image processing, artificial intelligence, ground systems, and the development of specific sensors and payloads. The overarching goal is to transition from simply purchasing satellite systems to co-developing them, thereby enabling Vietnamese scientists and engineers to progressively design, operate, troubleshoot, and eventually develop future satellite generations independently.
