In a significant move to bolster intellectual property rights, Thailand is set to destroy over 2 million counterfeit items seized from infringement cases. This initiative marks an increase from previous efforts, with the number of items slated for destruction rising by 36.45% compared to 2025, totaling 2.08 million items this year. The estimated value of these goods has also surged, reaching THB2.14 billion, a notable rise from THB900.91 million the previous year.
The confiscated items comprise a wide range of products, including clothing, watches, bags, electronic devices, vehicle parts, medicines, cosmetics, food, and beverages. The Thai authorities have been proactive in conducting enforcement operations targeting both online and offline markets to curb the proliferation of counterfeit goods.
Ensuring environmental safety, the destruction of these counterfeit products is being carried out in designated facilities equipped with environmental management systems located in Samut Prakan and Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya. This approach aims to dispose of the goods in a manner that safeguards the surrounding communities from any potential harm.
Despite these efforts, Thailand continues to be listed on the Watch List in the 2026 Special 301 Report concerning intellectual property protection and enforcement. In response, Thai authorities are collaborating with the United States on an intellectual property work plan. This plan focuses on enhancing enforcement measures, reducing the sale of counterfeit goods, protecting consumers, and fostering a more transparent business environment.
