Vietnam has underscored its expanding influence in fostering collaboration between ASEAN and Russia, as demonstrated during the ASEAN–Russia Commemorative Summit, which celebrated 35 years of dialogue relations. According to Foreign Minister Lê Hoài Trung, Vietnam played a pivotal role in the summit’s success by promoting ASEAN’s centrality and bolstering efforts to deepen the strategic partnership between the bloc and Russia.
The Vietnamese delegation, led by Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng, focused on promoting dialogue, cooperation, peaceful dispute resolution, and adherence to international law. Vietnam also put forward proposals to enhance collaboration in crucial sectors such as energy, trade, transport connectivity, agriculture, and digital transformation. These initiatives align with the summit’s adoption of new frameworks aimed at strengthening ASEAN–Russia cooperation through 2030, with a particular emphasis on energy as a key pillar of the partnership.
In a significant move reflecting its commitment to future regional cooperation, Vietnam announced it will host the ASEAN–Russia Young Diplomats Summit in 2027. This initiative highlights Vietnam’s dedication to nurturing the next generation of diplomatic engagement between ASEAN and Russia. On the sidelines of the summit, Prime Minister Hưng engaged in talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, where both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing the Vietnam–Russia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
Discussions between Vietnam and Russia focused on expanding cooperation across a range of areas including energy, trade, infrastructure, science and technology, education, and transportation. These discussions underscore a shared vision for strengthening bilateral relations and promoting mutual interests. Vietnam expressed confidence that the outcomes of the summit will not only fortify ASEAN–Russia relations but also contribute to regional stability and unlock new opportunities for economic growth and cooperation across Eurasia.
