In a significant milestone marking half a century of diplomatic ties, Thailand and Vietnam have elevated their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. This development signals a robust commitment to enhancing cooperation in political, economic, and technological spheres. The announcement came during the official visit of Vietnamese President and Communist Party General Secretary Tô Lâm to Thailand, underscoring the strong bilateral ties between the two nations.
As part of this enhanced partnership, the two countries have signed four pivotal agreements aimed at boosting collaboration in economic sectors, science and technology, education, and aviation. Additionally, they have crafted a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Action Plan for the years 2026 to 2031, setting a roadmap for expanding cooperation across various domains.
Key areas of focus include bolstering security and defense cooperation, especially in combating transnational crimes such as online scams and illegal fishing. Both nations are also set on tightening economic coordination to navigate global economic challenges effectively and foster private-sector growth. To further this goal, they have reaffirmed their commitment to increasing bilateral trade from its current standing of approximately $22.1 billion, with an ambitious target of reaching $24 billion in the near future.
Technology and innovation have been identified as critical priorities for the future, with plans to collaborate more closely in fields such as satellite technology, semiconductors, and agricultural biotechnology. Both countries also aim to enhance supply-chain integration and promote local economic connectivity. In addition, they are focusing on green energy cooperation to bolster regional competitiveness and ensure energy security.
President Tô Lâm has reiterated Vietnam’s dedication to deepening its relationship with Thailand, emphasizing a shared goal of fostering peace, stability, and sustainable development throughout Southeast Asia. This renewed partnership between Thailand and Vietnam represents a significant step forward in their collective efforts to address regional challenges and seize new opportunities for growth and collaboration.
